A huge field and unseasonably hot and humid weather made for a tough race of attrition at Sebring International Raceway on February 27 - for the start of the 2022 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season. No fewer than 48 cars took to the grid for Sunday’s race, a real bumper entry which was always likely to cause traffic problems; and so, it proved for Tom Sheehan in the No. 97 LTK Insulation Damon Racing Technologies Ford Mustang who was running up in P15 at the final restart. The outstanding effort by the Damon Racing team saw a finishing position of P19 and 7 Championship points and the checkered flag.
A rear differential problem was plaguing the car right from out of the trailer, but tough and experienced pilot Tom still qualified the distinctive yellow fox LTK TA2 Mustang in P20 on the grid. In the race itself he picked his way through the field - and the debris - as a series of coming togethers thinned out the field. Misha Goikberg and Gene Sigal had a particularly dramatic incident which brought out the red flag but for Tom the drama came at the end when he was the collateral damage of some perilous driving by competitors that caused considerable damage to the car and cost him several places and points.
“Tom had a great race. We had a little challenge with some of the restarts but he really did a great job and positioned the car well,” said Matt Romanowski, the team’s Electronic Technician. “We were up to fifteenth position and then at the last restart there was a whole bunch of bumping and hitting. He just skimmed the barrier at the exit to Turn 17 racing for position and it cost us. We had a solid P19 in a really tough field this weekend with lots of professional drivers out there. We come out of it pretty strong. We’ll put the car back together and come ready for Charlotte next month.”
Trans Am is back on the television this year and the first CBS Sports Network airing of 2022 will be TA2 on Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. ET. TA2 returns to the track at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s ROVAL on March 17-20. All the action can be streamed on the Speed Tour and Trans Am YouTube channels.
