Return of a Champion: Tomy Drissi to join Trans Am Series at Mid-Ohio
August 14, 2013
Tomy Drissi has a long and lengthy list of accomplishments in the Trans Am Series. He was Rookie of the Year in 1999, Most Improved Driver in 2000 and a Trans Am Champion in 2009. Drissi has placed in the Top 5 in an outstanding 47% of all Trans Am races he’s partaken in and won plenty of them—and now, for the first time since 2010, he’s back.
“We’re thrilled to have Tomy back in Trans Am and with us at Tony Ave Racing,” owner Tony Ave said. “He’s been a proven winner throughout his career and is more than capable of pulling off a win for us this upcoming weekend at Mid-Ohio. He’s the kind of driver you want in a car—professional, knowledgeable and, of course, talented. We’re going to continue to pursue drivers like him who can support Doug (Peterson) in pursuit of a Championship, can win races and can help us continue to improve and develop these cars.”
Drissi made his first Trans Am appearance in 1999 at Long Beach in a Lewis Ford Mustang Cobra, the same venue he won his first ever Trans Am Race at in 2000, a year later. Drissi then made multiple appearances in Trans Am under the Rocketsports banner in a Jaguar XKR, most recently in 2010 at Road Atlanta.
“Since I left the Trans Am Series I’ve driven a lot of great cars,” Drissi said. “And you always remember just how great these Trans Am cars are. Ask all the Trans Am greats, they’ll say the same thing. I think these cars will go down in history as legends—they’re some of the best driver’s cars in the world and I’m looking forward to getting back into the seat of one.”
“Mid-Ohio is a real rollercoaster of a track,” Drissi continued. “I’ve had a lot of success there and I hope to continue that success. I can’t thank Tony Ave enough for the opportunity to come race with Trans Am again and I’m looking forward to seeing some old friends.”
The combined duo of Drissi, the 2009 Champion, and current TA points leader Doug Peterson in the #87 3Dimensional.com Chevrolet Corvette, should give Tony Ave Racing a strong shot at extending their current winning streak yet another race. The current win streak dates back to Round 9 of the 2012 Season and has been contributed to by Peterson, Paul Fix and Ave himself.
Drissi will join one of the largest Trans Am entries in recent years as he and 37 other drivers take to the track at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio—just one entry off the all-time high for the venue, set in 1990.
