Rafa Matos Earns Another Podium For Silver Hare Racing
July 15, 2020
Similar to many families in the Midwest, the Silver Hare family loaded up for a weekend of fun “up north” near the gorgeous Brainerd Lakes for a great weekend of Trans Am road racing from Brainerd International Raceway. The iconic circuit has played host to many amazing series over the decades, a fan and driver favorite each and every year.
Based on Friday practice times in session #1 – most would think Rafa knew Brainerd as well as Mid-Ohio, however with this weekend the first trip to the 10-turn course, he still put the #7 Silver Hare Camaro at the top of the practice sheets on lap 5… and continued to lower his lap times, finishing almost a half second faster than second place. When it came time for P2, an early incident caused drivers to miss most of the session, and on “very old tires,” according to Rafa – he still ended the session on the front row.
With minor brake issues keeping Maurice from pushing the #57 NYTimes Best Selling Author of The UnWilling ZL1 Camaro in Practice 1, he rolled for practice 2 with a mission –
and came home 2nd in Masters for Friday practice.
When it came time for qualifying, Rafa and Maurice rolled out ready to show the speed of the Silver Hare Camaros. With multiple black flags halting the session, neither driver was able to get “the perfect lap” yet Rafa would line up the #7 in P4, with Maurice P2 in Masters.
When the green flag flew, Rafa jumped up to third place early in the race and held on for another podium finish.
“We had a great car Friday and Saturday, but we missed something today… a little disappointed to not get a win, but really proud of everyone at Silver Hare… this is how you win a championship, valuable points with 3rd place.” – Rafa Matos #
