Defending Champion Simon Gregg leads first practice session
September 27, 2013
The Trans Am Series took to the course at Virginia International Raceway at 11:35 p.m. EDT for their first practice session of the Trans Am 100, Presented by World Information Systems.
The session marked Trans Am’s first appearance on the beautiful track since 2011, and the Series picked up promptly where it had left off; with a showing of what makes Trans Am, well, Trans Am--power, performance and the adrenaline-pumping racecars that have carved out Trans Am’s legacy through the decades.
Leading the Trans Am pack was defending TA Champion Simon Gregg, behind the wheel of the #1 Gregg Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette, with a time of 1:49.273. Gregg is currently tied for second in the points standings with Cliff Ebben, behind current points leader Doug Peterson, in the #87 3Dimensional.com Chevrolet Corvette. Any momentum Gregg can build in the practice sessions could help tremendously in the defense of his Championship.
TA2 was led by Robert Huffmaster, behind the wheel of the #27 Kryderacing/VirSec Chevrolet Camaro, who barely edged Cameron Lawrence, current points leader and driver of the #11 Ctek/Motorstate/NorthStar Battery Chevrolet Camaro, with a lap of 1:58.289, to Lawrence’s 1:58.292. The battle between Huffmaster and Lawrence should be one to watch throughout the weekend, as both have put in commanding performances as of late.
TA3 was led by Steve Kent, Jr., in the #17 XLR8 Diesel Trucks/SKS Equipment Ford Mustang, with a time of 2:02.738, well ahead of the second best time, a 2:07.278, by Robert Korzen, in the #22 Elite Classics.net Ford Mustang.
The 28-car Trans Am field will take to the track again this evening, at 5:00 p.m. EDT, for the second practice of the day. Qualifying will take place tomorrow, Saturday the 28th, at 11:35 a.m. in preparation for the 101.37 mile race for Round 8 of the 2013 Trans Am Championship.
During testing yesterday the #19 Pitboxes.com/Racetrailers.com Chevrolet Camaro of Ricky Sanders withdrew from the event (mechanical), and John Atwell, driver of the #02 EJT Racing Chevrolet Camaro, withdrew as well.
