Drissi Motorsports team principal and 2009 series champion Tomy Drissi maintained a top five position in Trans Am presented by Pirelli championship points after Saturday’s round at Road Atlanta. After a high-attrition race for the entire TA class, Drissi and the #8 Trench Shoring Company/Motul Chevrolet Camaro sit fifth in points, with an opportunity to climb multiple spots when the series returns to action next month.
The entire Drissi Motorsports team headed to Road Atlanta with high hopes. Drissi himself has had a long run of success at the circuit, from a Petit Le Mans win in 2017 to four TA podiums in the past six years, while teammate Keith Grant (#7 Chevrolet Camaro) scored his first career TA podium at the track last year. They’d line up fifth and seventh on the grid after qualifying and settle in, hoping that a sensible strategy would allow them to return to the podium.
The strategy was the right one, as many of the biggest names in TA would face issues during the 40-lap race. Unfortunately, both Drissi and Grant would be among them, with each of their races affected by issues out of their control. For Drissi, the culprit was a broken axle while running in fourth, while Grant went off track from fifth place after having to avoid another car that was trying to recover from a spin.
“I’m gutted for the team, they all work so hard,” said Drissi. “The lead guys went off, so I just figured they’ll come back, they’re going to burn their cars down or we’ll get a full course yellow. We were fourth place, just waiting for a podium, ready to go attack one or two of them.
“Thank you to Tom Malloy and the whole Trench Shoring family, Motul, Franklin Road Apparel, and everybody on the team. We’ll bounce back and find our way back onto the podium.”
Despite the results at Road Atlanta, Drissi is well positioned to strike next time out as Trans Am’s national series returns to Sonoma Raceway for the first time since 2022. In that race, Drissi finished a strong second place, and he’ll be one of the only drivers on the grid this year with TA class experience at the California circuit. With most of the TA teams having faced adversity already this season, Drissi remains well within the championship fight.
Drissi Motorsports’ next race at the Sonoma SpeedTour will take place on April 24-27. TA class test sessions will take place on Friday at 9:40AM and 3PM, followed by Saturday practice at 9:25AM and qualifying at 3:30PM. Sunday’s race will kick off at 10:15AM and feature either 40 laps or 75 minutes, and can be seen live on either the Trans Am YouTube channel or Speed Sport 1. Tickets to watch the team in action are available now at SpeedTour.net, while live timing can be found at gotransam.com.
