Sheehan and LTK Insulation Technologies Tally Strong Results in Detroit Doubleheader

Detroit, MICHIGAN – June 5, 2023 – Following a trying Trans Am Memorial Classic at Lime Rock Park, Tom Sheehan and his No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing Ford Mustang turned their sights on the Detroit Street Course for Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2023 Big Machine Spiked Coolers TA2 Series season. Both races marked the Series’ return to “The Motor City” since 2019 when Tom and his competitors raced at Belle Isle.

The New Hampshire racer and his hardy team prepared a fast car to take on the 1.7-mile, 10-turn street course requiring the might and strength found with an LTK Pro-Fit Insulation Jacket. By all means, Tom took on the unknown challenges on the unique, challenging Detroit Street Course with confidence and his Ironman tenacity.

As Tom and his team prepared the No. 97 car for Race 1, the team struggled in the first practice for pace. While the veteran sports car racer had his work cut out for him on Saturday morning, he showcased some grit, working his way up to 17th after 12 laps.

Hovering inside the top 20 throughout the action packed doubleheader opener, Tom placed a 20th result.

“We just ran out of car,” Tom said. “The caution was needed for us to carry on as the brakes were smoked. We kind of revived them a little under caution. But four to five laps into the restart, they were smoked again. Just brought it home with a Top 20.”

Clearly showcasing promise and potential for a competitive weekend, Tom and his team went back to work, extracting the maximum out of the No. 97 Ford Mustang much like a business owner saving money and headaches with an LTK Fast-Fit Insulation Jacket. Starting in 22nd for Sunday’s race, Tom dropped a few positions back before climbing up to 21st on Lap 8.

Following a caution for Rafa Matos’ accident with 42 minutes remaining in Race 2, Tom put the spurs to his No. 97 ride, climbing from 20th to 15th during a long, green flag run. Showcasing his poise on the distinct street course, particularly after a late race tangle involving the frontrunners. Tom, who drove up to 11th, in the final laps would see the No. 97 LTK machine gain again on the field crossing the line in 9th place, a sparkling showing like LTK Insulation Technologies’ product’s…expect more.

Without a doubt, Tom and his team executed a masterful performance in Race 2, provisionally placing in ninth before a couple of post-race penalties boosted him to a seventh place finish in the official results. Tallying 109 valuable points from the Detroit doubleheader, Tom was awarded the Basset Hard Charger in Race 2 for his incredible drive from 22nd to P7.

Following the dazzling performance and result in Race 2, Tom caught up with our race reporter, recapping his march to a season best seventh place finish.

“What a weekend,” Tom said. “It is a testament to persevering. While I struggled out of the trailer, my guys kept working. The Cope camp was in full gear, making lots of good changes along with lots of teamwork. It feels great to give the team a Top 10."

“We got snookered on the initial start and had some work to do to get back to our place at race pace. The cautions fell when we needed them, and the last restart was a wild one. We took a long way around (Turn) 3 and it ended up being a good choice. It’s a big lift for the program.”

Much like smart managers are proactive by protecting their facilities from damaging condensation or inefficient energy consumption with an LTK Insulation Technologies product, Tom’s focus shifts toward Round 7 of the 2023 season at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on the weekend of Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25.

“We have a lot of work ahead,” Tom said. “It makes it a lot easier to tackle things after a day like Race 2 at Detroit. We will get to work on our car for Mid-Ohio.”

Tom has reasons to be confident about a strong weekend at the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course in Lexington, Ohio. Particularly, the Granite State racer has five Top 10 results, including a best finish of seventh in 2020.

Round 7 of the 2023 Big Machine Spiked Coolers TA2 season kicks off with a 45-minute test session on Friday, June 23 followed by a 25-minute practice session and group qualifying sessions on Saturday, June 24. Tom and his competitors take on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course with a 45-lap or 70-minute battle with the 3-Dimensional Services Group Classic on Sunday, June 25 at 10:55 a.m. ET.

This year, Trans Am races are available for live streaming on Trans Am and SpeedTour’s YouTube channels with full playbacks immediately available after the race. Also, the races can be seen in edited, 60-minute features broadcasted on MAVTV’s Thursday night primetime slot at 8 p.m. ET.
