Dyson Looks to Maintain Momentum at Mid-Ohio in Trans Am

To a casual observer the first half of the 2022 Trans Am by Pirelli season has looked like a benefit for defending series champion Chris Dyson. As the series visits the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend, Dyson enjoys a four-race winning streak and a seemingly substantial championship lead. With five race wins, all from pole position, in the six races run through Memorial Day at Lime Rock Park, Dyson and his #20 ALTWELL Ford Mustang would appear to be on track for a second consecutive title.

Dyson knows it’s far from a sure thing. “The whole team has been executing flawlessly, over the winter and since the beginning of the season,” he said. “But then there’s the luck factor. While it’s true that ‘good luck’ tends to favor the well-prepared, misfortune can visit anyone. We had a race-winning car, and a team with championship-winning potential, but at times during the 2019 and 2020 seasons it felt like we couldn’t catch a break. That’s what’s been happening to our competitors so far this season. You can never get too comfortable in racing.”

Luck can change, as Dyson knows too well. At Charlotte, the only race he hasn’t won this year, Dyson was battling for the lead when a tire deflated at top speed while he was on the high-banked oval section of the circuit. The ALTWELL Mustang hit the wall hard. “We were lucky the car wasn’t hurt badly,” Dyson said, recalling the incident at the second race of the season. “I was fortunate not to have gotten hurt either. And we still scored 5th-place TA points, so we didn’t leave Charlotte in too bad shape in the championship.”

At Mid-Ohio Dyson will face a stronger field than most recently, with the return of former series champion Wally Dallenbach, Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope and regular series front-runners Paul Fix and David Pintaric.

Dyson won the Mid-Ohio round of the 2021 Trans Am Series championship, in a spirited battle with erstwhile title rival Tomy Drissi. The two drivers have competed head-to-head again on multiple occasions in 2022 and Dyson expects a good fight with the series veteran as Trans Am visits the scenic Ohio venue.
"Tomy has been reallly strong the past few events," Dyson said.  "His team has been improving their car and he's historically been very strong at Mid-Ohio.  I know that I'll have to keep up my form this weekend if we are going to repeat last year's success."

CD Racing’s #21 allgram Ford Mustang To Run All Remaining Races
Business commitments have forced CD Racing’s Humaid Masaood, the regular driver of the #21 allgram Ford Mustang, to miss several races so far this season. With the global economic environment continuing to face uncertainty the London-based veteran racer has deputized Matthew Brabham as an as-needed substitute over the course of the remainder of the season. Indy Lights regular Brabham, who finished second at Lime Rock last month while standing in for Masaood, and won last year’s season finale while subbing for Dyson, will drive in any races that conflict with Masaood’s business commitments.

“My business schedule can change day-to-day,” Masaood said. “That’s not likely to change over the next few months. For the sake of my sponsor, allgram, and for the good of the team and the series, I want the car to run every race. I’m pleased that Matty has committed to being available, even on short notice, to stand in for me. And I'm eager to get back in the seat as often as possible in 2022."
