Damon Racing Sets Great Pace at Trans Am Indianapolis
August 5, 2019

Indianapolis, IN - August 5, 2019 - America's most famous and popular race track, Indianapolis Motor Speedway takes no prisoners at the speedway known as 'The Brickyard' and it took its toll on the TA2 No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Ford Mustang driven by New Hampshire based Tom Sheehan.
Round 7 of the 2019 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship TA2 class was always going to be a hugely competitive event, with 22 cars lining up in the hunt for points. Tom Sheehan went into the weekend very much on an upward curve after the double-header in Detroit back in June. The testing sessions starting off the weekend confirmed the competitiveness of the Damon Racing prepared Mike Cope platform car, with Trans Am Chief of Timing and Scoring Bill Skibbe clocking the distinctive yellow Mustang at 1:33:043 on lap three of the session for 6th place.
The fruits of the hard work put in by the Granite State team was there for all to see in the vital qualifying session for the race grid. Sheehan posted very consistent and quick times, recording three consecutive laps of 1:32:526, 1:32:566 and 1:32:570 that indicated he had found the optimum line, the best of which secured him a fourth row start in P8.
The high standards Tom and the team set for themselves were reflected in his comments after the qualification session when said, "We had a few teething problems and missed our mark in qualifying. It didn't work out in our favor, but we showed consistent pace all weekend and have a fast top 5 car. It's going to be hot and slick at Indy. I love the conditions. We have a great car and team and are going to have a good day. I'm excited to take part in tomorrow's race."
When the race - powered by AEM Infinity - got underway Sheehan was running in P8, just behind Rafa Matos and only five seconds off the podium marker held by Dillon Machavern when a broken rear track bar caused him to lose the driveshaft, necessitating a lengthy pit stop. Although he was able to rejoin the race late on, all chance of the high placing finish was gone. Sheehan's fastest lap of 1:33:988 on lap 3 was certainly top 5 pace early in the race, but that was scant consolation for the team who worked so hard. Now, looking forward to Ohio, knowing that they have the car to compete at the front of the grid.
It’s a quick turnaround for the Trans Am teams who now have just a few days to prepare before heading to another famous midwest track, this time to Ohio for the First Energy 100. Damon Racing and the LTK team will be looking to put things right on the track and turn pace into points.
