Sheehan Takes Positives After Frustrating Finish at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta
April 2, 2019

BOW, NH - April 2, 2019 - A promising weekend with an improving car turned into frustration for Tom Sheehan and the LTK Insulation Damon Racing team in Round 2 of the 2019 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship TA2 class. Sheehan was 9th on the grid out of 29 cars, having qualified his No. 97 LTK Insulation Ford Mustang in a quick 1:26:551. He was on course for a good finishing position with a steady charge and clocked a competitive best time of 1:27:380 on Lap 21, but a collision with the tire wall after a restart cost him five laps and effectively put an end to the prospect of a top ten finish.
Speaking after the race Tom was understandably disappointed but looked to take the positives from a weekend where he felt the team had progressed significantly in setting up the new Ford Mustang, “We don’t like the result but overall it was a huge improvement on going out to Sebring with the new car. To have a decent weekend with the pace of the car and we’re still learning how to set the car up. I like the changes and we just kept moving in the right direction all weekend. We told ourselves we’re going to need three races with this car to become comfortable with what changes we would make and I think we made a lot of progress. So, tough result, not what we were hoping for, but a good weekend for the team.”
Describing the race defining incident he added, “The race was coming to us for sure. I just made an error. I put it in kill mode after the restart, got in a little early and aggressive on a curb. The car didn’t like it and we ended up having some trouble down through the esses. Fortunately, it wasn’t a hard hit and I almost saved it but we ended up getting stuck up on the tire wall. So we had to wait for the track crew to come out and take us off the wall and we lost a number of laps.
Fortunately, no other cars were involved in the incident. Sheehan added, “The car drove just fine. Hard luck to bring it in and our day was pretty much over - we couldn’t improve on anything at that point. We weren’t gaining any spots. We took the restart, finished the laps and watched the fight up front. I’m sure the guys are disappointed but we have a lot to be thankful for that we can take out of the weekend.”
That next bite of the apple for Tom Sheehan and the LTK Damon Racing team comes at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca out west in California, May 3 - 5. The extremely competitive TA2 Class powered by AEM Championship continues for Round 3.
