Sheehan Upbeat after Tough Opening Weekend in TA2 at Sebring

SEBRING, FL – March 5, 2019 – This past weekend saw the opening round of the 2019 Trans Am presented by Pirelli season at Sebring International Raceway. The iconic American muscle car action formed part of the Sebring Vintage Classic with SVRA. The most competitive racing in the TA series is undoubtedly the TA2 Class and Sebring was no exception with 29 cars entered and 27 starting on the grid Sunday morning for the 100-mile TA2 Race powered by AEM Infinity.

The LTK Insulation Technologies Team of Damon Racing with Tom Sheehan behind the wheel had undergone a major overhaul in the close of the season. Sheehan made the switch to the Mike Cope Ford Mustang platform - so some teething troubles were only to be expected. Speaking in the paddock after the race he reflected, “We struggled a little bit with new car blues. We were a couple of sessions behind getting our car up to speed. We didn't qualify well so we ran a few extra laps to learn more about the car. I really like the racetrack a lot and Sebring is a fast circuit. We had higher expectations it didn’t materialize. We have some work to do”

Sheehan qualified of 17 out of the 29 competitors for the race on Sunday. The team spent the weekend working with Mike Cope Racing finding out ways to edge the LTK Mustang quicker through the paces. The extra practice and subsequent attention to the car paid off when the TA2 green commenced on Sunday. Sheehan began to pick his way through the field and had an excellent start to his race.

After a steady charge into the top-ten and keeping a smart race strategy – Sheehan and the No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Ford Mustang ,with three laps to the finish, had unfriendly contact from a competitor and heavy damage to the left front tire and fender. The compromised race car dropped back to 15th rejoining the field in the final laps

“It was a tough weekend but we had a top-ten in our sights today,” stated Tom Sheehan. “It is disappointing the contact on track. We hoped for a better finish but the team learned some things here in Sebring – excited to be looking ahead to Road Atlanta.”
