Tyler Gonzalez Leaves Road Atlanta with the Trans Am Series Point Lead

Two weekends, two podium results and the point lead for Tyler Gonzalez
March 26, 2024 – Only confirmed for the first couple of events in the Trans Am Series Presented by Pirelli, Tyler Gonzalez has quickly made a point of why he needs to be in the seat for the full season. Racing with the Nitro Motorsports program in TA2, Gonzalez earned his second podium result in as many races and left the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta as the series championship point leader.
Not new to winning, Gonzalez is the reigning Toyota GR Cup North America champion and has earned several trips to the top step of the podium in the Whelen MX-5 Cup program to date in 2024. Transitioning between cars and teams, Gonzalez was back in the much heavier and faster Trans Am car this weekend and took it all in stride.
“It is a shame about the weather we had on Friday afternoon that forced the cancellation of qualifying,” explained Gonzalez, who had to start the race from the outside of row two. “Basing the grid off practice results was ok for us, but I think we had a little more speed in it, and starting on the front row would have helped out with track positioning.”
Starting fourth amongst a host of Nitro Motorsports teammates, Gonzalez piloted his #40 entry inside the top-five for the first half of the race before advancing to third at the expense of his teammate and championship rival. With a late race caution and a two-lap dash for the finish, Gonzalez made a bid for second on the restart but lost momentum in the failed attempt and fell to fourth. Making a bold move on the outside of turn two before the caution flew again, Tyler was able to slot himself back into the third position and celebrated on the podium.
“This podium was well earned and everyone at Nitro Motorsports deserves it,” added Gonzalez. “We had some gremlins all weekend long, including in the race, but were able to overcome them. I am not sure what is next for me in the Trans Am program, but I hope to be back for NOLA in a few weeks and feel that I have earned the opportunity. Again, thank you to everyone who has made this possible.”
