Sebring, FL – February 26, 2020 - Ken Thwaits, team Principal and lead driver for the Showtime Motorsports Xtreme GT Class Audi R8 Ultras, is hoping all the hard work pays off this weekend at Sebring International Raceway when the mighty German thoroughbreds take to the track in Florida. Audi, and its predecessor Auto Union, have a rich history in motorsports dating back almost a hundred years and both the No. 5 Franklin Road Apparel Audi R8 GT3 Ultra piloted by Ken and the No.15 Franklin Road Apparel Audi R8 LMS Ultra which will be driven by Kevin Long are worthy contemporary contributors to the Audi racing legend.
The 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season has added a new class of competition this year. Xtreme or GT, confined to 2016 and earlier FIA GT3 machines that are no longer eligible to race in other professional series, Ken and the Showtime Motorsports team have traveled to Florida from Tennessee and are to be applauded for their expertise in preparing these ultra-powerful European V-10 sophisticates for the demands of Trans Am as they now embark on their first full season.
Naturally, Ken was looking forward to getting competitive when the curtain goes up, "After a busy week of testing at Sebring here last week, the Showtime Motorsports team is feeling good about our chances for success for the first Trans Am race of the 2020 season.”
“We also took possession of our sister Audi R8 Ultra this week as it was delivered to us fresh off the ship from Italy! We’ve spent all week preparing that car to compete this weekend with Kevin Long at the helm.”
“We still have some fine tuning to do during the race weekend, but we should have both cars running at their top potential by qualifying!”
2020 is the 54th Trans Am Series season and it's being launched at the same track that hosted the first-ever Trans Am race. There are nearly 60 cars competing in total on Sebring’s famously bumpy 3.74-mile circuit. The action on the track known as "The Birthplace of American Endurance Racing" gets underway for the GT competitors on Friday, February 28 with optional testing sessions both in the morning and in the afternoon. There is a practice session on Saturday, February 29 at 11 a.m. in the morning with the all-important qualifying session at 5:20 p.m.
The GT race shares the track with the Trans Am and other GT classes over 27 laps of the famous circuit at 11:20 a.m. ET on Sunday for the feature event.
