Franklin, TN - August 28, 2020 - Ken Thwaits is one of the names new to the fulltime Trans Am roster in 2020, but the Audi R8 LMS Ultras he and the Tennessee based Franklin Road Apparel team are running this year in the newly formed XtremeGT Class are certainly capturing attention on the muscle car circuit - and rightly so. After four rounds, Ken leads the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli XGT Class Drivers Championship with 127 points and he will be looking to extend that lead on the season standings in the upcoming double-header at Virginia International Raceway, September 24 to 27.
Ken's stunning black Audi has also been one of the cars featured on the first class new Trans Am live streaming App. The shots from the cockpit of the R8 LMS Ultra are terrific and give fans a driver's eye view of what it's like to be behind the wheel of one of these mean machines. Although a completely different type of vehicle from the Trans Am TA and TA2 Classes, the GT3 originated Audis are as quick as most of the TA cars over a single lap and quicker than the TA2 cars.
Showtime Motorsports is a well organized and highly professional team and principal partner Franklin Road Apparel banners their name on the team and the car. Ken exclaimed, "Franklin Road Apparel is a men’s and women’s boutique clothing store. It is located in the downtown area of Franklin, Tennessee which is a quaint little civil war town founded in 1792. We are located in the old fire station and it is adorned with automotive collectibles and memorabilia. We specialize in casual attire featuring brands like John Varvatos, Billy Reid, Naked & Famous, Psycho Bunny and more!" Franklin Road goods are also available online so be sure to check them out.
While we are all a bit disappointed that there's no racing at the Glen this year, the decision by Trans Am to stage two races at VIR seems to have been universally welcomed as a very good idea. It was certainly endorsed by Ken when we spoke to him this week and found him in a particularly good mood - coming off another win at Road America with GT Celebration last weekend and ahead of the trip to Virginia next month.
"It's unfortunate that Watkins Glen has been cancelled but not a big surprise," he said. "We will just make plans to visit the iconic track next year in the 2021 season. What is exciting is that now VIR has turned into a double-header. We will have to eat an extra dose of Wheaties to make sure we have the energy to tame that great facility twice in one weekend! Double points are at stake so it adds extra motivation to succeed in both weekend races."
The schedule for VIR has now been released and it couldn't be more spectacular. The first TA/XGT/SGT/GT race will be run on Saturday at 11:20 a.m. and has an extended duration of 75-minutes but the surprise announcement is that Sunday's race will be an all classes event with the TA2 racers joining the other classes for a three-way split start. Virginia promises to be a unique and particularly thrilling weekend. Don't miss the action which you can catch on Trans Am Series Facebook page, YouTube or on the Trans Am Racing App. #GoShowtime!
