Rain follows Trans Am to Watkins Glen as drivers deal with wet track during practice session

After a rain-logged weekend at Lime Rock Park, the Trans Am Series was hoping for a change in weather as it returns to Watkins Glen; however, a constant mist left the track damp and slick for Trans Am’s first on track session of the weekend.

The conditions did not prevent 24 members of the 33-car Trans Am field from taking to the track to get a feel for the legendary Watkins Glen course.

Leading the session was the #86 Baucom Motorsports/Roadraceparts.com Ford Mustang of John Baucom, who is making his Trans Am return after an unfortunate fire during the season opener at Sebring.  His first session back resulted in the fast lap of the session with a time of 2:04.074, a good three seconds faster than runner-up David Pinatric and the #57 Kryderacing/WRP Investments Chevrolet Corvette.

Third in the TA class was Allan Lewis in the #15 Gateway Racing Chevrolet Corvette, making his first appearance since Round 2 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

With wet conditions limiting the performance of all cars on the track, TA2 was still able to push into the TA pack in a similar fashion to last round at Lime Rock Park.  There Bob Stretch and the #98 Wheels America/Fix Rim Mobile Chevrolet Camaro were able to win the water logged event outright.  During this session Stretch was able to push his car to the third fastest time overall and the leading lap time for TA2, a 2:08.492.

Following Stretch were TA2 points leader Cameron Lawrence in the #11 Ctek/Motorstate/NorthStar Battery Chevrolet Camaro and runner-up Robert Huffmaster in the #27 Kryderacing VirSec Chevrolet Camaro.

The TA3 field was led by Lime Rock victor David Seuss and the #9 Northern Light Porsche 996 GT3, following him was the #17 XLR8Diesel Trucks/SKS Equipment Ford Mustang of Trans Am rookie Steve Kent and the #47 JOMAC Bodies and Cranes/Deb’s Peppers Ford Mustang of Rich Jones.  Both Jones and Kent are participating in their first ever Trans Am race as a member of the TA3 class.

Trans Am takes to the track at Watkins Glen next a 4:00 p.m. EST for the second practice of the weekend.  On Saturday, qualifying will take place at 11:15 a.m., followed by the Trans Am race on Sunday at 3:15 p.m.
