Nitro Motorsports Wins Again in Pittsburgh

Rafa Matos Earns His 23rd TA2 Win

June 10, 2024 – Looking to carry the momentum already established in 2024, Nitro Motorsports did just that. Claiming the pole position with Ben Maier, Rafa Matos earned the win as Nitro Motorsports put a pair of drivers on the podium, three in the top-five and four in the top-six. Thomas Annunziata earned an award for his drive from 18th to fifth as Nitro Motorsports has earned 11 of a possible 18 podiums so far this season.

In a weekend that featured a slightly different format, Friday would be the home of test sessions with Saturday providing the backdrop for official practice and the ever-essential qualifying session. When the timed runs ended and the grid was set for Sunday’s wheel-to-wheel action, it was 2024 race winner Ben Maier who clocked the fastest lap of the session and the accompanying pole position. Rafa Matos slotted into the third position to occupy the inside of row two with Tyler Kicera, making his first start of 2024, well inside the top-ten in P8. Pro / Am drivers Jared Odrick and Michele Abbate secured 13th and 14th starting positions overall. At the same time, Thomas Annunziata would be forced to start shotgun on the field after making a late trip from Sonoma, California to the Pittsburgh International Race Complex after fulfilling his NASCAR duties.

Qualifying was a good one for Nitro Motorsports as Ben Maier earned the pole position with Rafa Matos slotting himself into the third position. Putting a trio of team drivers in the top-ten, Tyler Kicera scored the eighth-fastest lap in his return to the Trans Am Series with Jared Odrick and Michele Abbate occupying row seven in 13th and 14th. Thomas Annunziata was forced to skip qualifying due to his NASCAR obligations on the West Coast and would return Sunday morning to compete starting from the tail of the field.

The winningest driver in Trans Am Series history continued to prove why he holds that title as he once again made his move to the front to earn his 23rd TA2 win. Celebrating on the top step of the podium, Rafa Matos was joined by Ben Maier in second in another Nitro Motorsports one – two finish. Annunziata drove from 18th on the grid to fifth to earn the Cool Suit Cool Move of the Race Award and put a trio of team drivers inside the top-five with Kicera putting four in the top-six with a solid drive forward in his 2024 debut. Michele Abbate crossed the line 15th overall but 5th in the Pro / Am class while Jared Odrick failed to complete the full race distance in his team debut.

Following the race, a penalty to a fellow competitor moved Annunziata to P4 and Kicera to fifth putting four Nitro Motorsports drivers in the top-five.

“We are continuing our momentum and success,” explained Nick Tucker. “We have earned 11 of 18 podium results this season and do not want to slow down anytime soon.”

Next up for Nitro Motorsports will be a trip to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course over the June 20-23 weekend.
