Mike Cope Racing Ready to Dominate 2021
Familiar faces, fresh wraps, and a few first timers join MCR at Sebring.
Clearwater, FL (February 16, 2021)— In over 30 years of being in the business, MCR has never faced a year like 2020. None of us have. To say goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021 has been a breath of proverbial fresh air. To come out stronger, and more determined than any year prior, is a true blessing.
Mike Cope Racing welcomes a strong presence of talented drivers under the tent for the Round 1 TA2 season opener at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, February 20th and 21st.
Thomas Merrill will bring his skill and professionalism back to MCR driving the #81 HP Tuners/ Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang. Merrill will, once again, proudly represent HP Tuners as they become primary sponsor for the 2021 season.
Back with a continued desire to win and steadfast loyalty to MCR, Keith Prociuk returns to Mike Cope Racing for the 7th consecutive season. The switch to a Ford Mustang in 2020 gave Prociuk some of the best finishes of his career and he hopes to continue the trend into 2021.
The 2020 Westcoast TA2 Champion and Iron Man award winner, Jim Gallaugher, hopes to retain his championship title for two in a row this season. Gallaugher’s dedication to the sport and perseverance to continue to always be better sets him apart from the competition. Let us see what the “Western Sizzler” has in store for Round 1 at Sebring.
A demanding workload in 2019 which continued into 2020 (combined with COVID), saw Matt Parent out on the job site and in meetings more than behind the wheel of his race car. But this year, that all changes. Parent made one start last year and that was at the the 2020 TA2 season opener at Sebring. He plans to return for more than just one in 2021.
To round out the tent for Round 1 at Sebring, will be two new faces to both TA2 as well as Mike Cope Racing. Ty Young and Al Prieto will make their debut in the MCR House Cars and both drivers are beyond eager to feel the horsepower.
After several years of tracking a variety of vehicles at HPDE and time trial events, Al began competitive racing in 2020 in an abbreviated season running a Ligier F4 with Momentum Motorsports. 2021 marks his first year with the Trans Am TA2 series.
Ty Young was raised in a military family and played football at Georgia Tech. He has since founded Ty J. Young, Inc. Wealth Management. He has been racing cars since 2010 and dabbled in Formula Mazda, Spec Racer Ford, and SPEC E30 Ford… to name a few.
When asked why he chose TA2 Young explained, “I’ve decided to make the jump to TA2 because it looks like a ton of fun to drive the higher horsepower cars at some of the most iconic tracks in the world.”
In other team news, MCR driver and road racing expert, Thomas Merrill will take on double duty as driver and team driving coach. Merrill will offer his expertise and knowledge to our MCR drivers looking for on and off-track consulting.
MCR will also be available for any on-site track support needed for any COPE Chassis in the field. When you run well, we look good—and it is a service we proudly extend to any of our customers. We are proud to see some well-known names to the TA2 series and MCR on the entry list. Good luck to Elias Anderson, Tom Sheehan, Tim Gray and Bruce Raymonds—to name a few.
It will be another busy year under the tent at MCR but with our seasoned crew members and new additions to the Mike Cope Racing team, we are focused on taking these cars to the podium.
Round 1 gets underway this week. Load in is scheduled for February 18th with a test day February 19th, practice and qualifying on February 20th and The Trans Am presented by Pirelli TA2 Race February 21st at 1:20pm EST.
