Adam Andretti joins Trans Am at Road America
June 19, 2013
The Trans Am Series finally has an Andretti back in the paddock. Nearly 29 years after an Andretti last raced in Trans Am, Adam Andretti will be joining the TA2 class at Road America in the #44 ECC Motorsports/Anchor Bolt and Screw Chevrolet Camaro. His addition puts Trans Am, America’s Road Racing Series, together with one of America’s great racing families once again.
“I’m truly excited to be participating in the Trans Am Series,” Andretti said. “I consider myself a fan of the history of motorsports, and Trans Am is such a huge part of that. It’s going to be a great experience.”
Andretti joins Trans Am as a member of ECC Motorsports by the way of AJ Henriksen who reached out to Andretti about filling the seat.
“We’ve been testing at Autobahn, putting the car through its paces,” Andretti said. “I’ve got roughly 100 miles in the seat, and I’m feeling really good about what we’ve been doing—I think we’ll be very competitive.”
As a member of the TA2 class, Andretti will be pushing the class entry to a record 18 cars; joining the likes of two-time defending Champion Bob Stretch and current points leader Cameron Lawrence. His entry also pushes the total Trans Am field to 37 cars for the Friday race.
“Seeing this strong of a field is really encouraging; I like seeing Trans Am gaining momentum and growing,” Andretti said. “And the larger the field the more rewarding the competitive result is, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.”
“I’m a fan of these TA2 cars,” Andretti continued. “They have a strong power-to-weight ratio and make for an affordable package to go racing. They’re fairly set in what you can do, but you can still be creative in the setup and get the car the way you want it.”
Andretti’s plans are not simply limited to Road America this weekend, as he hinted that there may be more Trans Am races in his future this year.
“We’d like to be back again this year,” Andretti said. “ We’ll take stock of how this weekend goes and then A.J. (Henriksen) and everyone at ECC Motorsports will sit down and we’ll see what we can put together. I should have a better answer after this weekend.”
Adam Andretti will join the Trans Am field when it takes to the course at Road America for practice Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. CST, for qualifying Friday at 10:10 a.m. and for the green flag on Friday at 5:45 p.m. for the 101.2 mile Trans Am Race.
