Dyson Looks For A Winning Trans Am Season Close In Texas
October 30, 2024
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 30, 2024) – While the odds of Chris Dyson winning a fourth consecutive Trans Am by Pirelli season championship are now dauntingly long, his approach to the 2024 season finale at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, will be the same as it has been all year with his #16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang – win the pole and win the race.
“The team has given me a strong car every weekend, a potential race winner,” said Dyson, winner from the pole at COTA in 2022. He has started on the pole four times and won or finished second in seven of the 10 races coming into the season finale this weekend. “But this year we’ve just had more than our share of simple bad luck.”
At the season opener Dyson was eliminated in a first-turn crash. At Road America Dyson took the pole, was knocked of the track by the second-place driver and roared back into winning contention before his race was ended by an electrical issue. Dyson won another pole at the series' penultimate round at VIR but a broken rear shock relegated him to a seventh place finish, now 93 points behind championship leader Paul Menard.
“Paul and I have raced each other hard all season,” Dyson said. “COTA is an unrelenting place for a driver, and we should be a lot better this year than last. If I’d had a bit better luck, (Menard) and I would be having a shoot-out for the championship this weekend. It would take extremely bad luck on Paul’s part to lose the championship; I think as long as he starts the event, he can just play it safe. But I’ll do everything I can to make him earn the championship. I want to wrap up the season with the GYM WEED car at the front. To thank the guys who have worked so hard to give me such a fast machine all year.”
Matos Strong Favorite For TA2 Title
A 5th-place finish earlier this month at VIRginia International Raceway for TA2 championship point leader Rafa Matos, three spots behind current points runner-up Thomas Merrill, prevented two-time class champion Matos from securing the 2024 title prior to this weekend’s season finale.
Still, Matos and his Concord American Flagpole Ford Mustang bring to COTA an almost insurmountable 106-point lead over Merrill. Matos, who won from the pole at COTA on the way to his 2021 championship, will be the odds-on championship favorite when the green flag falls Sunday morning.
