Franklin Road Apparel Heads to Sonoma Seeking California Success

The weekend's events at Laguna Seca for the Franklin Road Apparel team were enough to try anyone's patience, but resilient is team principal Ken Thwaits' middle name. The Showtime Motorsports team are ready to go again in the second leg of the unique California spring doubleheader that forms Rounds 4 and 5 of the 2022 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season.

In the TA Class, Ken Thwaits lies in P4 overall driving the No. 7 Franklin Road Chevrolet Camaro with a highly creditable 90 points. He achieved podium finishes at Sebring International Raceway and Road Atlanta already this year while the team scored their first TA Class win with Paul Menard's imperious victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

In the TA2 Class, Cameron Lawrence is now also in P4 in the championship out of a huge field with 75 points. Joining them in a three-car assault is Carl Rydquist, whose race at Laguna Seca was cut short by a brake issue.

"Motorsports is a tough game and we were reminded of that last weekend at Laguna Seca in no uncertain terms. Cameron and myself were particularly unlucky to be taken out of our races. We battled hard but didn't get the reward. Where we're fortunate is that we've been able to regroup, and we go racing again this week at Sonoma. We're learning and getting faster all the time so have every reason to be optimistic about the upcoming action."

The venue for the SpeedTour this weekend is Sonoma Raceway, formerly Sears Point Raceway and Infineon Raceway. It is a 2.52-mile (4.06 km) road course and drag strip located on the landform known as Sears Point in the southern Sonoma Mountains in Sonoma, California, USA. The road course features 12 turns on a hilly course with 160 ft of total elevation change.

Over the years, Sonoma Raceway has hosted the national Trans Am Championship 24 times from 1969 through 2004. The circuit hosted both spring and fall races five times from 1982 through 1986. It was the site of the 1978 season opener, in addition to serving as the season finale in 1981 and 1982. The most recent visit for the national Trans Am was in 2004, won by Boris Said in a Ford Mustang.

Ken can get his first taste of the track with optional testing on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. Practice is at 11:30 a.m. the following day with qualifying at 4:15 p.m. that afternoon. The TA race is at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.

The TA2 racers qualify in two groups between 4:25 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. with the race itself at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.

Don't forget that the CBS Sports Network is showing the action from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca this week. Presented by Franklin Road Apparel, the TA/XGT/SGT/GT race will premiere on Thursday, April 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET, with an encore presentation on Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 p.m. ET.

The TA2 race will first air on Sunday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. ET, with an encore later that night at 10:00 p.m. ET.
