Jacksonville, FL - August 5, 2020 - Fresh from debuting his stunning new Mercedes AMG GT3 out at Thunderhill in the 2020 West Coast Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship, the versatile and experienced Simon Gregg will be looking to build on his fine start to the National Championship when racing resumes at Road America this weekend, August 6 - 8.
It was a spectacular debut for Simon and his new car in Northern California. The 2019 West Coast TA Class Champion opted to vacate his title and run instead in the new XtremeGT Class, for which the AMG Mercedes GT3 is the perfect match. In Simon's capable hands, he duly qualified the German thoroughbred in a very rapid time of 1:44.826, averaging over 103 mph and setting a track record in the class in the process. He even bettered the time of old rival Greg Pickett who was in a TA Class Ford Mustang.
A busy schedule for Simon means he's back in action straight away, with Road America next up as he's racing on back-to-back weekends. Simon currently sits in fourth place in the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season TA Class Drivers contest with 67 points after his first podium of the season at Brainerd the last day where he finished in P3. That result was in no small part due to the fact Simon also has a new car in the TA Class Championship, having switched from a Chevrolet Corvette to a Chevrolet Camaro.
Clearly enjoying his summer, Simon spoke to us ahead of the trip out to Elkhart Lake and one of Trans Am's most popular venues, "Thunderhill was great. I had a good car with the Mercedes and it was great to do battle with my old friend Greg Pickett. Now, it's back to business in the National Championship. The Camaro has been performing extremely well and I'm looking forward to racing at one of my favorite tracks. Roll on Road America!"
Simon's No. 59 Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro will be in action at Road America qualifying for the TA Class alongside the GT Classes on Friday afternoon, and on a busy weekend that includes truck racing and the NASCAR Xfinity series, the race itself is at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Although spectators are being admitted to the pretty Wisconsin facility, unfortunately there will be no live streaming on this occasion.
