Strong Start to 2020 for Ruman – Takes 3rd at Sebring Trans Am Opener
March 3, 2020
Munroe Falls, Ohio – After not being in the car for nearly four months, Amy Ruman didn’t skip a beat putting together a strong showing in Round 1 of the Trans Am Championship Presented by Pirelli at Sebring International Raceway.
With no testing in the off season, Ruman and the team had to work out a few gremlins during the Thursday test day but had them sorted out by official Trans Am practice and qualifying on Friday. The Central Florida weather was picture perfect for racing with sunny skies and cooler temps prevailing all weekend long.
Ruman had a great qualifying late Friday evening, and put the No. 23 McNichols/Cornertech Chevrolet Corvette in second place to start on the front row for Sunday’s race. As the green flag dropped, Ruman challenged pole sitter Ernie Francis Jr., taking them both deep into turn one, with Ruman maintaining second place into the next few corners. She had good early battles during the race with Andretti, Dyson, and Drissi all swapping positions in the top five. After the second yellow flag condition of the race, the drivers were set for a final 5 lap shootout. On the final restart, it was Francis Jr., Drissi, and Ruman all fighting for top spot. Unfortunately, two cars crashed hard into the barrier coming out of turn 17 and the race would end under yellow with Ruman taking home third place.
“It was a strong start to 2020 for us and a solid points weekend! We were faster than we have been here in recent years, and I was pleased to qualify on the front row. We kept pace early in the race, then had a few snags so the caution helped us. I felt like we had a lot of car left for the final laps, it’s too bad we had to finish under caution I was looking forward to a shootout!” exclaimed Ruman. “On a side note, this weekend was the debut of the new Trans Am app and live streaming – and it is just awesome! Fans and teams have been waiting a long time for us to be live again and the video and streaming was so cool for the fans to watch if they couldn’t be at the race. The Trans Am team did a fantastic job in the offseason to get this to launch for our first race!”
The Series officially announced this weekend its global coverage with live streaming video and its new digital app. LIVE STREAMING will be available via the free Trans Am by Pirelli Racing app, which integrates live scoring, race highlights, post-race highlights, full race replays, race results and series, team and driver news.
