Franklin, TN - June 24, 2020 - The resumption of the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season is finally upon us and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course announced yesterday that it will open its gates to spectators on a limited basis this weekend for the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid Ohio. The June 26-28 race weekend is the longest continuously-running annual event at the motorsports facility in Lexington, Ohio.
The impending showdown represents a terrific opportunity for the stunning No. 5 Franklin Road Apparel Audi R8 GT3 Ultra piloted by Ken Thwaits to score maximum points in the newly created Xtreme GT Class.
The weekend at Mid Ohio is officially titled "The Vintage Grand Prix" and all manner of automotive machinery will be on display. We can be guaranteed a weekend of tremendously competitive action on the track.
Making the trip North from their base in Tennessee through Kentucky to the great State of Ohio is the Showtime team sponsored by Franklin Road Apparel and headed by team principal and number one driver Ken Thwaits. Ken will be taking two cars eligible for the XGT Class to Mid Ohio and deciding late on which one to race. Added to that, Ken will be competing in the International GT Racing races which also form part of this unique weekend, so you could say that he's returning to action with a bang!
"Naturally, the team is thrilled that there will be some spectators. I know they've been doing everything they can," stated Ken, when we spoke to him over the weekend. "It adds to the atmosphere of course, but I'm just pleased to get rolling again. A big shout out thanks is due to the track, Trans Am and of course the State of Ohio for getting the racing on."
We asked Ken about the double-headed nature of the weekend and he added, "It's going to be a busy weekend, that's for sure but the more time I can get out on the track, the happier I am, so I definitely see it as a positive. I want to win in my class in Trans Am of course, but truthfully we are still perfecting the set up for these Audis. They're complicated supercars, so time on the track is invaluable. I think people will be impressed and remember there's a seat available for the right person."
The Mid Ohio Sportscar Course is one of the most popular tracks on the Trans Am roster and is a fixture in the calendar. Located seven miles outside the town of Belville, and covering over 330 acres, Mid Ohio Sportscar Course is a perennially popular weekend venue and has Motorhome/RV spaces throughout the facility and a campground available for tent camping. It's picturesque setting nevertheless belies the challenging nature of the circuit, something that hasn't escaped Ken's attention, "It's a very challenging track but one that I'm looking forward to."
A revised schedule means qualifying for the XGT cars is at 5:15 p.m. on Friday with the race itself at 1:25 p.m. on Saturday for 100-miles of multi-class road racing.
