Franklin, TN - June 30, 2020 - A weekend of decidedly mixed weather at the Mid Ohio Sportscar Course meant an event of spectacular racing as the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season resumed at last. A fine podium second place in the new Xtreme GT class meant Ken Thwaits enjoyed a high profile weekend in Trans Am, with the Showtime Audi R8 pilot also proving a star of the new Trans Am livestream.
Ken had plenty of screen time in the combined TA/XGT/SGT/GT race with the in-car shots proving particularly effective at giving viewers an idea of what it must be like to drive one of these stunning Audi Racing cars.
The Showtime team arrived at Mid Ohio with a busy schedule as they were also competing in the International GT event which formed part of the Vintage Grand Prix weekend. That consisted of transporting two cars from their Tennessee base up to Ohio - the black Audi R8 LMS Ultra and the white, slightly different configuration Audi R8 GT3 Ultra but it was the black car Ken chose to compete in the Trans Am XGT class, and he immediately put down a marker, posting 1:28:272 in testing.
He improved that to a terrific time of 1:25:966 on lap 13 of the official practice session on Friday but a downpour later that day meant qualifying on a wet track. Nevertheless, Ken's qualification on lap 4 gave him pole position in class and in a time that would have put him well up among the TA class itself.
The race on Saturday lunchtime also started on a hazardous wet track, something that resulted in an early spin for Ken before he recovered to finish strong.
"What a weekend, rain off and on meant we started wet,” stated Ken. “I spun on the first lap, soldiered on like a drunken sailor, came back and regained the spots. Then, I got a pretty good lead as things started drying out. When I got passed for the lead I thought, hey, we've got nothing to lose. Let’s gamble and put slicks on so I came into the pits. We came back out and went as hard as we could. Erich [Joiner] did the same. They matched us."
Ken had a busy weekend all round, and the white liveried Audi R8, available to drive competitively for the right person, was seen to good effect in the International GT event which was also staged this weekend as Ken pointed out when he added, "International GT was fun. We had our white customer car out there. First race it's completed, first race its run. That car is getting faster!"
It was great to see some competitive motorsports again and Mid Ohio, Trans Am and the State of Ohio are to be congratulated on giving the weekend the go-ahead. Trans Am plans to be back at Brainerd July 10 to 12 and naturally we all hope that the pandemic situation permits the continuation of Trans Am racing after such an exciting weekend in Ohio.
Showtime highly recommends racing fans tune in to the Trans Am live stream either through the YouTube channel or via the stunning new Trans Am App available for free download from the Google and Apple play stores. The coverage is excellent and Showtime is featured with a viewcam in the cockpit of the Audi R8. Don't miss out. #GoShowtime #GoTransAm
