Showtime Planning Dual Assault On Donnybrook Prize

Franklin, TN - July 6, 2020 - While it may have looked highly unlikely at various stages in this uniquely challenging year, the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season will be racing again just two weeks after the last outing at the Mid Ohio Sportscar Course with the historic Brainerd International Raceway playing host to what will undoubtedly be a special weekend.

Few, if any, competitors at Mid Ohio had a busier weekend than Showtime Motorsports Team Principal and Driver Ken Thwaits. A Podium P2 finisher in the XGT Class, Ken doubled up at Ohio by racing in the International GT series event as well. Not a team to let the grass grow under their feet, Showtime Motorsports are doubling up again at Brainerd by taking both of the Audi R8s North to Minnesota.

Ken confirmed they would by taking two cars to the Ryan Companies US sponsored event when he spoke to us this week, "Our Showtime Motorsports team is really looking forward to running both our Audi R8 Ultras at the historic Brainerd race track also known as Donnybrook. This will be our first trip to the iconic track and we're very much looking forward to learning the quick way around the circuit. Kevin Long will be back in our white customer car Audi R8 and I will drive the black Audi R8. We have finished 3rd at Sebring and 2nd at Mid Ohio so we are looking to improve our results coming into the third Trans Am race of the season."

Brainerd rookie Ken is in for a treat at Brainerd, which has always been synonymous with fun. Doubling as a drag racing venue, the 2.5-mile track is also very technical, something that may well suit the GT3 style Audi R8s.

In this most difficult year, Brainerd are to be applauded for making the weekend free to spectators, while the fabulous new Trans Am App means that fans can follow the action much more easily.

“We’re really excited about the weekend because it’s hard to watch road racing on a 2.5-mile road course,” BIR owner Kristi Copham said. “But watching with the help of this app is really going to be a game changer. Fans can watch all the action on every section of track, which will keep everyone involved in the race.”

The “drive-in style” approach, which allows tailgating, is an approved spectating method, according to the Minnesota Department of Health’s COVID-19 guidelines. BIR still strongly encourages social distancing, wearing masks and washing hands. The track takes extra precautions at the front gate and throughout the facility as well.

Ken and Kevin will get their first taste of the track at 11:00 a.m. on Friday for a testing session with another at 3:20 p.m. the same day. Practice is at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday with qualifying at 4:30 p.m. Trans Am has center stage the whole weekend at Brainerd and the feature event is the Ryan Companies US/Jed Copham Tribute TA race scheduled for 1:35 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

Showtime sponsor Franklin Road Apparel has been staying very strong during the current pandemic, following all the recommended measures and business practices. It has been a very difficult period for us all, to say the least, but it looks now as though we may be emerging from the worst of it, with Ken Thwaits, Kevin Long and the Audi R8s very much to the fore.
