Bow, NH - June 22, 2020 - Thankfully, the much anticipated restart of the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season remains on schedule for this weekend's June 28 event at the Mid Ohio Sportscar Course. After such a challenging period for everyone, the muscle car road racers of the motorsports community will indeed be able to come together and race again as planned at what is surely one of the most popular and competitive circuits on the roster.
No subdivision of the Trans Am field is more competitive than the TA2 class, and Damon Racing driver and 2019 Iron Man award winner Tom Sheehan will be welcomed back to the paddock surrounded by the rolling cornfields of Central Ohio. Tom has had his ups-and-downs in recent seasons, but with the backing of Mike Cope and his expert crew, and the energy and will to win, optimism is high that the resumption of competition will mean a change in fortunes for one of the sport's most committed and dedicated participants.
The Mid Ohio Sportscar Course consists of 15 turns, 2.4 miles and is nevertheless a firm favorite with Tom and many other drivers in the TA family. It's a venue where the Granite State pilot has finished in the top-ten in each of the last two seasons of TA2 class racing, hence the optimism in Tom's words when he spoke to us this week.
“Strange times. The world looks to have some mechanical problems. I look back to men and women I admire and cherish and ask - what would be the best way to respond to the events of the last few months? It’s an open question. I am still processing. My gut tells me it’s a mental health problem, as much as, a physical science and physical world dilemma.”
Tom continued, “Racing TA2, Mid Ohio, is the pursuit I am focusing on. Racing is a sport where you break a boundary to create a new level, a new personal achievement. The new high point becomes your new baseline. Then you want and strive for more. The competition rewards the moment of achievement. Next the competition works to better the mark, never satisfied. Grateful for the opportunity to race, thankful for all the efforts of the staff at Trans Am to navigate the bizarre quirkiness of regulatory bodies. Safety and freedom can be contradictory. We have been hard at work on racing, Jamie and Jeff have taken the on track hiatus and used it to our advantage, we will unload and restart our 2020 season. Mid Ohio is a great track for me, we are going to have a great time in Ohio, Thanks to everybody who makes it possible.”
Tom Sheehan's distinctive yellow No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing Ford Mustang will be one of 27 cars taking to the track late on the afternoon of Friday June 26 for the testing session, and that assembly of machinery will surely be a great sight for all motorsports enthusiasts and fans everywhere after the last difficult weeks. A re-jigged schedule means practice for the TA2 teams is now at 10:55 a.m. on Saturday, with qualifying now slated for 6:10 p.m. the same afternoon. The grid for the TA2 race forms up at 12:55 p.m. on Sunday with the race itself powered by AEM scheduled for 46 laps or 100 miles of the circuit at 1:25 p.m.
In accordance with the protocols laid down by the state of Ohio, there will be limited general admission access for spectators present at the circuit and the required social distancing measures will be in place.
