Daskalos and Kleeman top TA3 and TA4 as first practice concludes
ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. [August 25, 2017] — Martin Ragginger and Gar Robinson opened Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli action at Road America in style, topping their respective practice sessions with fast laps around the iconic 4-mile circuit. Also leading their classes on track were Jason Daskalos and Brian Kleeman in TA3 and TA4, respectively.
Martin Ragginger, in the No. 50 GoShare/ Axalta Chevrolet Camaro of Burtin Racing, continued the fine form he showcased in a commanding performance last round at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where he finished second, with a 2:07.624 lap. Ragginger led every practice session at Mid-Ohio, but saw qualifying canceled due to lightning and standing water, leaving the race grid to be determined by points and Ragginger, making his TA debut, to start in the back. This weekend Ragginger will hope for better weather and a chance to qualify in a position to immediately challenge for the lead.
Following Ragginger in the TA class was current points runner up Vinnie Allegretta, in the No. 41 TA Sights & Sounds Chevrolet Corvette, with a 2:07.918 lap. Allegretta, the 2016 TA class Rookie of the Year, is still in pursuit of a career-first Trans Am win despite finishing on the podium five times in seven competitions this year.
Third quick in the TA class was Appleton, Wisconsin, native and defending race winner Cliff Ebben, in the No. 36 Stumpf Ford/ McMahon Group Ford Mustang, with a 2:08.003. The class top five was completed by two-time defending champion Amy Ruman, in the No. 23 McNichols Company Chevrolet Corvette, and Simon Gregg, in the No. 59 Derhaag Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette, with times of 2:09.544 and 2:10.883, respectively.
Current TA2 points leader Gar Robinson, in the No. 74 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, led the TA2 class with a blistering 2:13.612 lap, underneath the qualifying track record set by Justin Haley of 2:13.897 just last year. Robinson opened the year with three victories over the first four races and has only missed the podium once in the seven rounds of TA2 action so far.
Following Robinson in the session was the driver directly behind him in the championship, defending TA2 champ Tony Buffomante, in the No. 34 Bestline Superior Lubricants Ford Mustang, with a time of 2:14.140. Buffomante enters the weekend on the back of two consecutive victories at Mid-Ohio and Brainerd International Raceway. Buffomante and the No. 34 claimed the TA2 class victory at Road America last year.
Third quick was Cameron Lawrence, in the No. 19 Class Auto Centers Chevrolet Camaro, with a 2:14.604. Lawrence is a two-time victor at Road America in his own right, with wins in 2013 and 2014, en route to his two TA2 championships. The TA2 top five was completed by Rafa Matos, in the No. 88 3-Dimensional Services Chevrolet Camaro, and Shane Lewis, in the No. 72 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, with times of 2:14.698 and 2:14.823, respectively.
The TA2 top ten also included, in order, Lawrence Loshak, Justin Haley, Tom Sheehan, Doug Peterson, and Sheldon Creed.
The TA3 class was led by Trans Am debutant Jason Daskalos, in the No. 7 Daskalos Racing Dodge Viper Comp Coupe, with a time of 2:16.391— showcasing the V10 Viper platform on the straights of Road America. He was followed in the class by current points leader Mark Boden, in the No. 46 Fall-Line Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, with a time of 2:17.417 with teammate Tim Kezman, in the No. 4 Fall-Line Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, just behind with a time of 2:17.996.
Conor Flynn, in the No. 95 Irish Mike’s Automotive Porsche 997, was fourth quick in TA3 with a time of 2:19.559 while Tom Herb, in the No. 16 Fall-Line Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, completed the top five with a time of 2:20.294.
In TA4, points leader Brian Kleeman, in the No. 07 DWW Motorsports Ford Mustang, easily led the field with a 2:21.633 lap, over four seconds faster than nearest competitor, Todd Napieralski, who turned a 2:26.075 lap behind the wheel of the No. 39 Chevrolet Performance/ TREMEC Chevrolet Camaro. Kleeman’s DWW Motorsports teammate, Chris Outzen, in the No. 97 Ford Mustang was third quick in TA4 with a time of 2:27.361.
Joe Bogetich, in the No. 65 Westover Controls Chevrolet Camaro, and JR Pesek, in the No. 10 Rennsport KC Ford Mustang, completed the TA4 top five with times of 2:27.853 and 2:29.548, respectively.
