Berryman Trans Am at the Brickyard Underway
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. [June 15, 2018] – The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli officially commenced its Berryman Trans Am at the Brickyard weekend today with the 28-car TA2 class holding practice in preparation for Saturday’s Berryman Muscle Car Challenge.
Rafa Matos, current TA2 points leader and driver of the No. 88 3-Dimensional Services Chevrolet Camaro, would set the fastest time of the session a 1:30.001 lap, starting his Indy weekend in the same fashion he closed out last round at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix: on top. The lap easily eclipsed the track race record 1:31.557 set by Dillon Machavern last year at a venue Matos knows well from his IndyCar career.
Second quick in the session was Shane Lewis, in the No. 92 Turnkey Industries/ Surphis Chevrolet Camaro, with a 1:30.638. Lewis has a history of pace around the 2.43 mile course at IMS, well documented in a charge from the back of the field to a podium placement in 2018.
Scott Lagasse, Jr., in the No. 95 SLR/ Fields Racing/ M1 Fastrack Chevrolet Camaro, was third quick with a time of 1:31.239 as he made his first IMS appearance under the Trans Am banner.
Detroit race one victor Tony Buffomante, currently second in the points and driver of the No. 34 Mike Cope Ford Mustang, was fourth quick with a 1:31.520; while Joe Napoleon, Lewis’ Napoloen Motorsport teammate and driver of the No. 91 Turnkey Industries/ Surphis Chevrolet Camaro, completed the TA2 practice top five with a time of 1:31.655.
Paul Tracy, in the No. 87 3-Dimensional Services Chevrolet Camaro, turned a 1:31.873 lap, sixth best in session, as the 2003 Champ Car Champion makes his second appearance in the Trans Am Series, following up on a strong debut at Road Atlanta earlier this year.
The remainder of TA2 top ten featured, in order: Thomas Merrill, John Atwell, Jordan Bupp and Matt Parent.
The TA2 class will return to the track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this afternoon for qualifying at 5:30 PM ET.
The event is Trans Am’s second-ever appearance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and will feature the TA2 class’ Berryman Muscle Car Challenge Saturday June 16 at 2:40 PM ET and the TA, TA3 and TA4 classes’ Berryman Trans American Sunday June 17 at 3:15 PM ET.
