Jason Hart Gives Dodge Challenger First TA2 Pole of the SeasonĀ

TA2 class takes to dampened track at Watkins Glen for qualifying

WATKINS GLEN, NY [September 8, 2017] – The last minute addition of Jason Hart to the Stevens-Miller Racing stables paid dividends today in TA2 class qualifying for the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli’s Watkins Glen Muscle Car Challenge at Watkins Glen International with Hart securing the first pole of the season for the Dodge Challenger.   Hart, like the rest of the TA2 field, took to the track under mixed conditions, with the 3.4-mile course still wet from afternoon showers.

Hart, a veteran of sport scar racing, was originally slated to serve as a driver coach for Jason Kennedy; but when Kennedy arrived onsite under the weather, Hart was asked to step behind the wheel of the No. 12 Speedlogix Dodge Challenger.   The result was a 2:04.495 lap—easily strong enough to land Hart his first career TA2 pole in his second Trans Am appearance and putting the No. 12 at the front of the 21-car TA2 class for tomorrow’s race.

The pole stands as a continuation of last round’s success at Road America for the Dodge Challenger, where Sheldon Creed captured the class victory for Stevens-Miller.

Starting alongside Hart will be Harry Steenbakkers, in the No. 78 BC Race Cars/ Ottawa West Development Chevrolet Camaro, who turned a 2:06.277 lap to secure the best starting position of his career in advance of his 11th TA2 start.

Starting third will be Cameron Lawrence, in the No. 19 Class Auto Centers Chevrolet Camaro, who turned a 2:06.788 lap.  Lawrence has a history of success at Watkins Glen, securing a TA2 win in 2013, and is coming off a strong fourth place finish last round at Road America, recovering from 19th position after a pit lane drive through after leading the race in its initial stages.

The TA2 starting top five also included Shane Lewis, in the No. 72 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, and Dillon Machavern, in the No. 24 Heritage Motorsports Ford Mustang, who turned times of 2:07.616 and 2:08.792, respectively.  Machavern is the most recent TA2 victor at Watkins Glen and led nearly all of last year’s race after starting second.

The TA2 qualifying top 10 included, in order, Doug Peterson, Tony Buffomante, Gar Robinson, Louis-Phillipe Montour and Tom Sheehan.   Gar Robinson, in the No. 74 Pura Vida/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, and Tony Buffomante, in the No. 34 Bestline Superior Lubricants Ford Mustang, are currently one and two in the TA2 championship points, with Robinson leading by 21 points.

The TA2 class’ Watkins Glen Muscle Car Challenge, a 102-mile 30-lap race, will be held at 10:55 AM ET tomorrow, Saturday September 9, while the TA, TA3 and TA4 classes will qualify later in the day for their own multi-class competition, the Watkins Glen Trans Am 100, to be held on Sunday September 10 at 11:00 AM ET.

The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli weekend at Watkins Glen is being held in conjunction with the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association and its US Vintage Grand Prix weekend.

All results provisional until posted final.
