Ponte Vedra, FL - July 13, 2020 - Trans Am driver Simon Gregg's stunning new Chevrolet Camaro bodystyle impressed Sunday at Brainerd International Raceway in the Ryan Companies US/Jed Copham Tribute race staying on steady target to claim his first podium finish of the season behind longtime adversaries Tomy Drissi and Amy Ruman.
Round 3 of the truncated 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season saw the muscle car series returning to one of its most hallowed venues for the first time in three years. It's a track where Simon Gregg has done well before, and he began the weekend by posting a competitive time of 1:29:738 on lap 7 of the practice session.
He bettered that when posting 1:29:697 in qualifying for P5 on the grid, just behind Chris Dyson and ahead of Humaid Al Masaood, each competitive CD Racing drivers.
The race got underway Sunday lunchtime and Ernie Francis Jr. pulled to an 18.6-second lead in a bid for a third-consecutive triumph in 2020 - while eventual winner Tomy Drissi was involved in a terrific battle with Amy Ruman for second. That proved to be the fight for the win, as Francis went out with mechanical problems shortly after Drissi passed Ruman for second leaving Simon to use all his experience in claiming a well deserved third place on the podium - his first top three finish of the season.
"I'm thrilled to get third today. We started fifth and were able to move up a couple of solid positions. I just kept plugging away and had a really good, reliable car to hold off Masaood and Kerry Hitt." Always the fierce competitor, Gregg added, "I'd like to have been a little closer to the front two but I'm happy with third."
The 25 Championship points Simon scored for making the podium at Brainerd keep him in the hunt for a top three spot in the Drivers Championship. Meanwhile, it was a great weekend all round for Trans Am, with the free, drive in style, easy access for the fans proving a hit with locals all around. To back it up, the coverage on the increasingly popular Trans Am App goes another step giving fans a closer ticket to the Trans Am action.
The next time points are up for grabs in the Trans Am Championship is at Road America August 6 to 8 where Simon Gregg and Derhaag Motorsports will again be aiming the powerful new Camaro at the podium.
