Franklin, TN - July 13, 2020 - Round 3 of the 2020 Trans Am Championship presented by Pirelli at Brainerd International Raceway on July 12 saw a 1-2 podium finish in the XGT Class for Showtime Motorsports and an impressive P5 overall for Ken Thwaits. The results capped a terrific weekend for Ken and the Showtime team, whose GT3 pedigree Audi R8 LMS Ultras have undoubtedly begun to show their renowned speed and class.
Ken is team principal at Showtime and also the team's lead driver, so he was naturally delighted to bring home his black No. 5 Franklin Road Apparel Audi R8 LMS Ultra in first place ahead of teammate Kevin Long, who piloted the white sister car, the No. 15 Franklin Road Apparel Audi R8 LMS Ultra. Perhaps even more impressive was that the Audis were able to mix it with the TA Class cars all weekend. Ken's fastest lap of 1:32:843 represented a new lap record in the class, while he also finished ahead of a number of the TA racers.
These Audis are getting faster, there's no doubt about that. Guest pilot Mike Skeen, eventual winner of the TA2 race on the weekend, test drove the white customer car driven in the race by Kevin Long in the first test session at Donnybrook and was two-seconds faster than the TA machines. His time of 1:28:058 would have put the Audi on the front row of a TA grid based on that session. Ken then subsequently posted a quick 1:28:843 himself in first official practice on Saturday morning - third fastest among all starters. These times only reinforce what great cars the Audis are and what a fabulous opportunity the customer program Ken is running represents. Drivers looking for a great seat should get in touch!
In the race itself, Ken had colleague Kevin for company but only needed to avoid error to collect maximum points. “It was kind of an uneventful race,” he said at podium celebrations, which was nevertheless his first win in Trans Am. “Brainerd is a lot of fun, and the Audi loves it here. I just wanted to keep the mission – keep us off the dirty part and stay on the clean part. We showed up, and we got it done today. All the guys who missed the trip up here really missed out.”
The Jed Copham Tribute weekend undoubtedly worked really well, with a tremendous atmosphere at the circuit and first rate coverage on the streaming services. The thirty points Ken garnered for the win at Brainerd take him into the lead in the XGT Class Championship, something he will be keen to maintain when the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli returns to action. That will be at Road America on August 6-8 with the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
