Andretti, ECC ready for Road America
August 25, 2015
Round 7 of the Trans Am Series 2015 3-Dimensional Services Group Champion at Mid-Ohio saw a new standard in multi-class competition. ECC Motorsports driver Adam Andretti finished on the podium in both TA2 on Friday and TA class on Saturday. It was the first time one driver had finished in the top 3 in two different classes at the same event.
Andretti finished 3rd in the Friday TA2 class race. On Saturday he made his second TA class start of his career and brought the #47 ECC Motorsports Corvette home 3rd.
With the powerful rise of TA2 as one of the fastest growing new classes in professional road racing, several great Trans Am drivers if the past have returned and earned a podium finish to go with podium finishes in past years on the Trans Am circuit. Those drivers include Tommy Kendall, Wally Dallenbach, Jr., Pete Halsmer, and Tommy Archer. This season Tony Ave was added to the list.
In 2014 ECC Motorsports owner and driver A.J. Henriksen followed up a 3rd place finish in TA2 at New Jersey Motorsports Park with a 3rd place finish in the season finale at Daytona. That made Henriksen the first driver to finish on the podium in two classes in the same season.
"It was pretty exciting. We found that as a team we could be competitive in both classes without taking away from the best effort of our primary focus, TA2." Henriksen said. "During one of the test sessions we had planned on Adam getting laps in both cars. We had a problem with the TA2 car and as the time in the session slipped away I looked at the TA car sitting there and wondered if the problem with the Mustang(TA2 car) wasn't going to damage our chances with the Corvette. It didn't and we know that we can do both now when the opportunity presents itself."
In an interesting twist Andretti qualified 8th for both races. That was only one twist in a double weekend full of twists and turns. "Most of the drivers know this track is a race with a lot of give and take and there was mostly just taking going on." Henriksen said. "It was just a rough weekend." In the TA2 race Andretti worked his way into a 4 way battle for the lead with Dillon Machavern, Gar Robinson, and Cameron Lawrence. Heading over the hill into the Madness section of the course, contact between Robinson and Machavern turned the leader Machavern around. That created an accordion effect crash with Andretti hitting and spinning Lawrence's Dodge. Andretti continued on with some noticeable body damage.
The 3rd place finish earns Andretti the 4th place in the points standings. He is two points behind Machavern for 3rd.
In the TA race Andretti had some early contact with a TA3 car and fell back early. "We thought maybe that was what our day was going to be about, but Adam started getting faster. He started passing some cars. Some other cars had some trouble and the next thing we know Adam is finishing 3rd."
Next for ECC Motorsports is round 8 at Road America on Saturday August 29, 2015.
