Allegretta grabs first podium of the year at VIR
October 4, 2016
Vinnie Allegretta scored his first podium finish with a second place at Virginia International Raceway. The runner up drive followed the best qualifying result for the TA Sights and Sounds/ Dr. Dave(Health) #41 Corvette of his rookie season. A second place, front row start.
Second place points and bonus points for qualifying 2nd pushes Allegretta into the top 10 in series championship points.
VIR was the third race for Allegretta's new race car. Vinnie scored a 6th in its debut at Mid Ohio and then followed that with a 4th at Road America. The car's performance continued to improve at VIR with a second place run that was better than it looked. In turn 1 of the opening lap of the race Allegretta slid off the outside of the track and into the grass. As a result he fell to the rear of the TA class field. As he worked his way back thru the field toward his second place starting spot he suffered off track excursions on laps 8 and 14. In both cases he lost a spot or two but did not have to start all over at the back of the field.
By lap 18 Allegretta was solidly in the top 5 and looking for more. Four laps from the end John Baucom spun his Ford and Vinnie slipped by to gain the second spot and that is how the race finished.
"Paul Fix set a new track record at 1:48.159. Our best lap was 1:48.160. Pretty good for a Rookie. Don't you think?" Allegretta said. "We are very happy with the new car. Working with Tony's(Ave) guys has been huge. The car is really well sorted out. They help us on set up and we get better. The car has been really good. We lost a little time with new car bugs at Mid Ohio because the car didn't have any laps on it. Since then its just been little tweaks. We are just doing small stuff with the car. It really helps me to build confidence."
VIR was also Vinnie's bests qualifying effort in the series. "I get better in qualifying. I really concentrated on getting a good lap and being patient." he commented. The old Vinnie would have raced the slower cars and chewed up my tires rather than using them to get a fast lap. Now I have learned to back off that slower traffic and find some clear track for a good lap. At VIR my best lap was the last lap of the session."
With his first top 10 finish and two top 5 finishes in a row, Allegretta and the TA Sights and Sounds/Dr. Dave(Health) team heads to the high speed banking at Miami Homestead Speedway. This is one of the fastest tracks on the Trans Am schedule. The faster the track the more Vinnie likes it.
Allegretta looks for that last step up on the podium at Miami Homestead October 7-9. See GoTransAm.com for timing and scoring and news from the track.
