Allegretta and Buffomante Set Fast Laps in Second Practice at Brainerd

Kezman and Pesek Pace Production Classes as Ryan Companies Weekend Continues

BRAINERD, Minn. [July 1, 2017] – The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli continued its series of practice sessions today at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) in final preparations for this afternoon’s qualifying sessions for the Ryan Companies Independence Day Classic and Ryan Companies Muscle Car Challenge.  Fast laps around the 2.5-mile competition course in Practice 2 were set by Vinnie Allegretta, in TA, Tony Buffomante in TA2, Tim Kezman in TA3 and James Pesek in TA4.

In the TA class, Vinnie Allegretta, in the No. 41 TA Sights & Sounds Chevrolet Corvette, set the fast lap for the session, a 1:27.495, well below the qualifying track record and the fastest lap of the weekend.   Allegretta, the 2016 Rookie of the Year currently second in the points, entered the weekend enjoying the best season of his Trans Am career. Despite that success, three podiums in five races, he’s yet to touch the top step, mostly thanks to current points leader and winner of four straight, Ernie Francis, Jr.

Francis, in the No. 98 Buoniconti Fund Ford Mustang, was second quick in the session with a 1:27.858; while two-time defending TA champion, Amy Ruman, in the No. 23 McNichols Company Chevrolet Corvette, was third with a 1:28.062.

The TA class top five was completed by Jed Copham, BIR track owner and driver of the No. 44 BC Race Cars/ BIR Chevrolet Corvette, and Jeff Hinkle, in the No. 9 gogocreate.com Dodge Challenger, with times of 1:29.569 and 1:33.439, respectively.

In TA2, Tony Buffomante, in the No. 34 Bestline Superior Lubricants Ford Mustang, once more paced the field, this time with a 1:30.012—shy of his 1:29.237 lap from earlier in the day but still well under the existing qualifying track record.

Following Buffomante, once again, were the Robinson Racing duo of Shane Lewis, in the No. 72 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, and Gar Robinson, in the No. 74 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, with times of 1:30.246 and 1:30.916, respectively.

In fact, the entire TA2 top five remained in sequence from the first practice session with Lawrence Loshak, in the No. 5 Pennzoil/ ETE Reman Chevrolet Camaro, holding fourth position with a 1:31.253, and Tom Sheehan, in the No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Chevrolet Camaro, remaining fifth quick with a 1:31.337 lap.

In TA3, Kezman, in the No. 4 Fall-Line/ Calypso Porsche GT3 Cup, once more led the production-based class with a time of 1:32.242, comfortably ahead of the rest of the TA3 field.  The Fall-Line sweep of the top three was disrupted this time though, with Randy Kinsland, in the No. 11 Kinsland Racing Chevrolet Corvette, turning a 1:33.339 lap of his own—a marked improvement over his first session time of 1:34.647.

Mark Boden, in the No. 46 Fall-Line/ Calypso Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, was third quick, in the TA3 class with a time of 1:33.484.  While Tom Herb, in the No. 16 Fall-Line Calypso Porsche 911 GT3, and Cindi Lux, in the No. 45 Lux Performance Dodge Viper ACRX, completed the top five for TA3 with times of 1:33.633 and 1:36.798.

The TA4 class was once more led by James Pesek, No. 00 Rennsport KC Ford Mustang, with a time of 1:38.783, edging his father JR Pesek, in the No. 10 Rennsport KC Ford Mustang, who turned a 1:40.161.  The duo were the class’ only participants in the session.

The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli will return to the track at Brainerd International Raceway this afternoon for qualifying sessions, commencing at 2:30 PM CT.
