Showtime Staying Focused For Trans Am Return with Audi V10 Power

Franklin, TN - March 24, 2020 - After debuting in the new Xtreme GT category at Sebring International Raceway, the No. 5 Franklin Road Apparel Audi R8 LMS Ultra will be raring to go when Trans Am resumes - whenever that may be.

The inaugural race of the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season saw Showtime Motorsports team principal and pilot Ken Thwaits collect the XGT Masters award, as the Tennessee driver notched a podium third place finish in the inaugural race of the new XGT class for a highly creditable P9 overall in the combined TA/XGT/SGT/GT race. It was a finishing position that placed him ahead of some of the traditionally quicker TA cars. The Audi R8s that Showtime are running are new to Trans Am. A completely different class introduction on the Trans Am circuit, they are well worth a closer look.

Still in production, the Audi R8 is based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig. Conceived and executed as a genuine road-to-track ultra high performance supercar, it made its first appearance at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show and then again at the 2003 Frankfurt International Motor Show.

The Audi R8 prototype was designed, developed, and manufactured by Audi Sport GmbH. This is Audi AG's private subsidiary company manufacturing high performance automotive parts. It was based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform, Lamborghini being owned by Audi. The fundamental construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame, using an aluminum monocoque which is built using space frame principles. The car is built by Audi Sport GmbH in a newly renovated factory at Audi's 'aluminum site' at Neckarsulm in Germany. Power for these beauties comes from a 500 PS (368 kW; 493 hp) V10 engine, doubtless tweaked for extra performance. While our domestic American muscle cars attract a very strong crowd, there is no doubting the pedigree of these exciting machines and European following as well.

Like the rest of us, Showtime Motorsports supremo Ken Thwaits is disappointed not to be racing this weekend at Road Atlanta but acknowledged that public health and safety must come first. He spoke earlier this week and brought us up to date with Showtime before the recent announcement of the postponement of Laguna Seca, “At this time the second round of the Trans Am series is postponed at Road Atlanta. This Covid19 virus is pretty potent and we all need to do our part in squashing it so that we all remain healthy and we are able to get back to racing!"

Rather than losing races completely, Ken is hopeful that weekends like the one in Atlanta can be rescheduled rather than cancelled, "Hopefully this race can get back on the calendar for 2020 as Road Atlanta is an epic, classic road course for us. Looking forward to a postponement date at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, this is TBD. The last time I raced there was 1986 before the course was redesigned! We will have both of our Audi R8’s ready to compete and can't wait to get back out there!"

Unfortunately, Laguna Seca has now fallen by the wayside as Round 3 out in California will need to find a reschedule date for later in the 2020 season. Like Ken, naturally we all hope that Spring brings about a major improvement in the situation nationally and globally and we can indeed race sooner rather than later.
