Robinson Racing Duo Top Second TA2 Practice At VIR
September 22, 2017
Gar Robinson, Shane Lewis Turn Fast Laps As Weekend Continues
ALTON, VA. [September 22, 2017] – Teammates Gar Robinson and Shane Lewis paced the TA2 field at Virginia International Raceway in the class’ second practice session, opening the day’s Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli action. The duo, in the No.’s 74 and 72 Pura Vida Tequila 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaros, turned respective fast laps of 1:51.480 and 1:51.668 around the 3.27-mile 18-turn course in the south Virginia heat.
Robinson enters the weekend atop the TA2 championship point standings, 16 points ahead of runner-up, and defending champion, Tony Buffomante; while Lewis holds third position in the championship some 34 points behind Buffomante.
Appropriately, Buffomante, in the No. 34 Bestline Superior Lubricants Ford Mustang, was not far behind with a 1:51.733 lap—strong enough for third position on the practice chart. Buffomante has a history of success at VIR, winning the TA2 class in 2016 and setting pole in 2014 while setting the fast lap of the race in each of the past three TA2 competitions here.
Fourth quick was the No. 88 3-Dimensional Services Group Chevrolet Camaro of Rafa Matos turning a 1:51.733. Matos turned the fast lap of the weekend thus far in yesterday’s TA2 practice session, a 1:50.998, under cooler conditions.
Cameron Lawrence, in the No. 19 Class Auto Center Chevrolet Camaro, would turn the fifth fastest lap of the session, a 1:52.990, however, suffered a brake failure later in the session near turn 14, bringing out a red flag. Lawrence was able to exit the car under his own power and was later released by medical.
The TA2 top ten also featured, in order, Kyle Marcelli, Tom Sheehan, Doug Peterson, Roberto Sabato and Phil Lasco.
Also of note, Joe Stevens, in the No. 11 Speedlogix Dodge Challenger, joined the TA2 field with a last minute entry this morning; while Keith Prociuk, in the No. 9 HP Tuners Chevrolet Camaro, was forced to watch practice from the sidelines while the Mike Cope Racing Enterprises team worked away to swap the No. 9’s engine.
The TA, TA3 and TA4 classes will hold their first practice session of the weekend later today at 5:10 PM ET, while the TA2 class will return to the track for qualifying shortly thereafter at 5:40 PM ET.
