Shane Lewis leads the way as TA2 makes Indy debut with practice session

Drivers get first taste of Grand Prix course in advance of Sunday TA2 showcase

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana.  [June 16, 2017] – While other Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli classes held their first practice sessions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) yesterday, TA2 class drivers were finally able to grab their first taste of the 2.439-mile Grand Prix course— with Shane Lewis leading the way from behind the wheel of the No. 72 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro.

Lewis, a veteran of motorsport and now of TA2, wheeled the No. 72 around the course to the tune of a 1:31.570, opening up a full second gap on the rest of the, otherwise, tight TA2 top five.  Lewis, who finished runner-up in the 2016 season in championship points, has made three podium appearances in the four rounds thus far but is yet to make it to the top step in 2017.  However, the task of remedying that at Indy will be a fierce one, with the No. 72 slated to start at the back of the TA2 grid after a Detroit penalty.  If Lewis can capitalize on his speed, and overcome his starting position, on the way to an improbable victory, it could be one of the all-time great TA2 drives.

Second quick in the session was Dillon Machavern, in the No. 24 Heritage Motorsports Ford Mustang, with a time of 1:32.595.  Machavern currently sits second in the points, eager to make up ground on current leader, Gar Robinson, after a disappointing Detroit outing that saw Machavern finish 15th.

Machavern’s Mike Cope teammate and TA2 defending champion Tony Buffomante, in the No. 34 Bestline Superior Lubricants Ford Mustang, was third quick with a 1:32.597—just two thousandths of a second off Machavern’s time.

The TA2 top five was completed by Cameron Lawrence, in the No. 19 Class Auto Centers Chevrolet Camaro, and Gar Robinson, in the No. 74 Pura Vida Tequila/ 74 Ranch Resort Chevrolet Camaro, with times of 1:32.633 and 1:32.682, respectively.

The top ten of the 26-car field also featured Lawrence Loshak, Tony Ave, Adam Andretti, John Atwell and Doug Peterson.

TA2 will return to the track tomorrow, June 17, at 11:00 AM ET for their second practice.  The TA, TA3 and TA4 classes will hold their qualifying sessions commencing at 5:25 PM ET later today.

The Trans Am Series is joined on the weekend by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association holding their Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational, including the Indy Legends Pro-Am as well as the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup series.
