The 2019 Trans Am Season in Review (Race Recaps)
January 13, 2020
Saturday’s Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli Muscle Car Challenge was all about survival. On Sunday, the TA2 powered by AEM drivers amped up the aggressiveness for the Motor City Dash, risking everything for a chance to permanently add their names to the list of winning drivers in the long Trans Am history of racing in Detroit. Celebrating his 100th career Trans Am start, Tony Ave (No. 25 BC Race Cars) took the lead in the final laps to claim his 19th win and his first-ever win on the streets of Belle Isle. Dillon Machavern in the No. 77 Liquid-Molly Prefix Ford Mustang dodged traffic and accidents to finish second and Tony Buffomonte in the No. 34 Mike Cope Racing recovered from a spin into the barriers to fight back for a third-place finish
A true Cinderella story unfolded on Monday at Lime Rock Park after Chris Dyson claimed the Trans Am presented by Pirelli victory in the No. 20 Plaid Ford Mustang. Ernie Francis Jr. recovered from an early-race setback to claim a hard-fought second place result ahead of Josh Hurley to complete the podium as Trans Am returned to the traditional Memorial Day weekend event at Lime Rock Park. Tomy Drissi (No. 8 Godzilla King of the Monsters / Chevrolet Camaro) scored fourth at the finish, with Paul Fix (No. 4 Ave Motorsports / Ford Mustang) crossing the line fifth.
Some raw video from the TA2 race at Lime Rock Park for the Memorial Day Classic. This was a fantastic race! Scott Lagasse Jr. Dillon Machavern Racing and Thomas Merrill had an incredible battle. Scott had to finish the race with no power steering but managed a 3rd place. Dillon and Thomas never got more than 50 feet from each other the last 10 laps. Who saw this in person? The crowd at Lime Rock was awesome
In the closest qualifying session of the season so far, a mid-session strategy switch up for the Mike Cope Racing team sent Thomas Merrill straight to a polewinning start as the California-native stole the fastest lap in the final seconds of the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli TA2 powered by AEM qualifying Friday at Lime Rock Park. Underscoring the nature of TA2 competition, the top-eight times were separated by less than four tenths of a second.
You may remember Michele Abbate from Hoonigans Wanted season 1 - she's been pursuing her racing dreams relentlessly ever since. And now, that's gotten her behind the wheel of this GRR Racing TA2 Camaro, a full-on racecar powered by a spec V8, with all the other racecar fixins. Like a 4 speed gearbox, a quick change rear, and much more. Cue us trying to take this thing for a lap or twenty around Willow.
